Exploring the Blue Mountains

Galleries

Known as the City of the Arts, the Blue Mountains boasts many galleries, antique shops, and craft markets. Discover local artists, or even your own inner artist with many opportunities to take a class or workshop around the region. Katoomba is home to one of Australia’s leading regional art galleries, The Blue Mountains City Art Gallery, which offers numerous exhibits, along with concerts and workshops. The Gang Gang Gallery showcases both regional and national artists. Located in a gorgeous heritage space in Lithgow, the building itself embraces both old and new, with numerous artist exhibits, along with permanent exhibits of glassware, porcelain, iron works and more. Gallery Blackheath is an artist owned gallery, featuring prize winning Blue Mountains artists, with new exhibitions being shown regularly. The Blackheath Art Society also offers workshops and various exhibitions through the year, with groups available to join. If you’re an antique lover, there is plenty to tickle your fancy, while your crafty side can easily find inspiration wandering the villages of the Blue Mountains.

Sightseeing

Don’t let the cooler days of winter stop you from enjoying the incredible sights of the Blue Mountains! Whether you’re looking for a solo adventure or some fun with the family, there are many ways to explore the area. Check out the Scenic Railway for an exciting way to discover the Jamison Valley, where glass roofed carriages travel through the cliff side tunnel, into the stunning rainforest and valley floor. You can also take a ride on the steepest aerial cable car in the southern hemisphere for spectacular views of Katoomba Falls, Orphan Rock, and the Three Sisters, or take in the sights from above through the glass floor of the Scenic Skyway. Festivals and Events

The winter season brings back the annual Winter Magic festival, celebrating the winter solstice, with street performances, entertainment, and art showcases, being held in Katoomba on June 22. Coming in July, discover Scenic World’s Winter Makers Market, celebrating local talent with market stalls, entertainment, and more. And of course, you won’t want to miss the mid-winter Yulefest, for which the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area is famous for. With a “Christmas in July” atmosphere, you can find festive food and drink, decorations, cozy fires, and lots of entertainment throughout the area.
