Get your garden spring ready

Spring has sprung, and now’s the time to prepare your garden for summer. This guide will walk you through how to tidy up your garden, get your lawn in check, plan your spring garden, and plant seedlings while they’re dry. We’ll also cover planting perennials so they can grow well over the summer months.

Tidy up your garden

  • Sweep and rake up any leaves and debris
  • Remove weeds, including those growing in the lawn
  • Trim path edges
  • Check the condition of your garden tools

Get your lawn in check

Rake your grass to remove leaves and debris, free matted patches of grass, and create a nice, even surface. Once complete, you can begin fertilising to reinvigorate its nutrients, wake it up from its winter hibernation, and give you a lush green lawn for spring!

If there are any bare patches on your lawn, now is the perfect time to seed them. As spring is still cold at night, deep watering can sit on top of the soil, so only water when and where it’s needed.

Plan your spring garden

Spring is a great time to start planning your garden. You can get it all set up in the spring and then spend the summer enjoying your hard work.

Here’s how:

  • Prune back old growth on roses, camellias and other shrubs so they’re easy to walk through.
  • Plan a trip to the nursery to find the best plants, flowers and vegetables for spring planting.

Plant seedlings while they’re dry

Planting seedlings while they are dry will help them to establish better and reduces the risk of fungal disease. If you choose to plant in wet conditions, ensure that your seeds have been previously treated with a fungicide.

Plant your perennials

Plants are the backbone of any garden, so this is a great time to plant your perennials. Perennials can provide colour and interest to your garden all year round, so they’re ideal if you want to add some colour without worrying about what needs to be planted each season.

Perennials are also great for attracting birds and butterflies into your garden. There are many different types of plants available, so there’s sure to be something that will look good in your space!
